Slice of Life #2

I open the bag of ornaments, remembering how we got them and hanging them before.
My mom and dad also help, and we spend a fun time together. My dad grabs the star, and on some steps, puts it carefully on top of the tree. We start with the lights, then the ornaments.
I place a sparkly ornament on the tree, and we begin the hanging. This really is the perfect tree!

It starts to get dark outside, but we keep hanging. One by one we place the ornaments on the tree, all different colors. Many shapes, sizes, and designs. The tree looks amazing so far  but we still hang ornaments in the bare spots. When we are finished, we turn the lights off and the tree on. When the tree is on, it glows and shines, when its off, it sparkles.

Stand Tall

Stand Tall by Joan Bauer

This book is about a boy named Tree, who is 6 foot 3 inches and a seventh grader. He always gets made fun of, and is having a hard time after his parents' recent divorce. His grandfather, has served in the Vietnam War has lost his foot and is learning how to walk without it, and he fails being an athlete. This book touching, and has a lot to do with friendship, and helping people. This wasn't my most favorite book, but I still recommend it for anyone. It is a quick read, and also easy.

Slice of Life

It almost took me a minute to find one of the perfect gifts for my BFF. It may be small, but it sure will mean a lot to her. We walk into the icy air, looking for good shops to go to. I hold my hot chocolate close, the warmness of it drifting into my hands. I release a breath, steam blowing out of my mouth. This is my first time on the Holiday Walk, and it is amazing. I take 5 step before my feet go to a halt.

We are standing in front of Barnes and  Noble, looking through the window at brand new books for all ages. I shiver and we walk inside. We spread amongst the floor, looking at groups, meeting other groups, and getting drinks. My stomach growls, begging for food. We will eat soon, so I'm not worried. We find another group and all decide where to eat. We walk out of the store, making our way to 'The Corner Bakery' We are all an AS, and that's what makes the Holiday Walk so special.

Limerick Poems

1. There one was a student from Logan,
Who decided to write his own slogan.
It stuck in his head
as he lay there in bed,
Waiting to write it down soonly.

2. Standing right there,
brushing her hair,
In the snow,
Not going home,
Holding her brush in her hand.

3. The year has come to an end,
With not much time to spend.
Snowflakes dancing,
Wind prancing,
Its winter one again.

Occational Poetry

The first international make-up
company was Max Factor
and Company. When people
came to the stores,
eager to try on the more
'modern' cosmetics. The way
that everything
was more modern was
amazing, for before
there weren't the best cosmetics.

Almost Home

Almost Home by Joan Bauer
This book is about a twelve-year-old girl named Sugar, who doesn't have the best life. Her grandpa dies, and her father is a gambler. When she and her mother, Reba, lose there home in Missouri, well, they travel to Chicago seeking for a new start. This book makes you think twice about homeless people and how they had lives before they became homeless and even a family. It is really touching, although they very beginning is a little confusing. This books makes you worried, and deep in thought about what will happen next. It is a pretty quick read, and 240 pages.

Poem

Mine is really confusing and wierd

Looking back at its home, it spreads its wings and flies off to explore the world. Wings frail and colorful, it travels through strong winds and crowded places. That butterfly flies free, without a single care in the world, flying to that special place it needs to see. Flying by friends, relatives, it just keeps flying. Taking twists and turns, ups and downs, it keeps flapping its wings and gliding through the air. It has a longing to go back, but its winds keep flying forward. It practically turns around, but no; it keeps flying. It goes high, high, high, passing by colorful blurs and dots. Stars start to pop up, but it keeps flying. Tiered, half asleep, its wings lead it. People are already in their homes, back from a busy day of work, sipping tea with their family. I lay in bed, hearing my parents snore from their room really loud. And that butterfly keeps flying.

Irish Curse Poem

Irish Curse Poem

May you rot to death in a speedo
with no one to live with,
but you sons and daughters be cursed,
and you would be
shoved down the disposal
and off to hell,
and your sons and daughters along with you,
 and may
you be scratching a beggermans back,
and you would get so fat that you wouldn't fit in plus size clothes
(and you all know how that ends...).

This is written to whom I am very frustrated with, but I am not to say whom.

Tangerine

Tangerine by Edward Bloor

This book is about a boy named Paul who is legally blind and in middle school. His sport is soccer, and he is really into it. His brother, Erik, on the other hand, is a high school football star and Paul and Erik have a bad relationship. Moving from Houston, Texas, all the way to Tangerine, Florida is not all that easy. This book is REALLY intense, touching, and sad, and gory. There are a lot of details which is good, but this book is not too appropriate for younger ages. I thought it was very sad, and I wouldn't read it again, (maybe) but it is REALLY detailed.

Free Verse Poem

This is my poem, it isn't the best though...

I smile down at my hands
grasping a colorful, gift wrapped present.
Why does it seem that kids like presents more than adults?
I tear open the light paper to reveal a nook tablet.
Joy bursts over me as I jump up and down.
My smile grows bigger as I open my next present.
This in New year, a new me,
 a new year, new resolutions,
and the start of a new adventure.

Tangerine

Tangerine by Edward Bloor

This book so far is about a boy named Paul Fisher who moves to Tangerine, Florida. I don't want to give this away too much, so I won't say too many details. To everyone else, Paul's older brother Erik, is a big football star. To Paul, he is an older brother. This might give some away, but Paul is legally blind. This book can get pretty intense but its really good so far. It is written in 1st person and has a lot of action.

Solving Zoe

Solving Zoe
By Barbara Dee
This book is about a girl named Zoe who isn't like her older sister- a drama queen- or like her brother-a brainiac.  In fact, she goes to a gifted school named Hubbard which is a lot like our school. Zoe finds out that she is pretty much being stalked by some weird new kid from Guatemala named Lucas who is OBSESSED with codes. He always keeps his notebook with him but one day, somehow it ends up in Zoe's hands. In the notebook are written different codes and weird things in it that Zoe does NOT understand. She ends up reading her name, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Throughout the book, Lucas tries to convince that Zoe is a natural code reader but what will happen next? ... This book is a pretty amazing book which you can kind of relate to real life but not AS much. I actually learned a lot of different codes from this book and a little about them. This book is pretty easy to read, and I recommend this book for people who are interested in codes, and who are curious and ready for a cool 'adventure'.

Wake Amanda Hocking

This week I read a book called Wake  by Amanda Hocking.
This is a REALLY good book. It is about a 16 year old girl named Gemma, who  meets 3 girls, Penn, Lexi, and Thea who are visiting. They are beautiful, and their usual area is at the bay, where Gemma loves to swim. To Gemma, swimming her LIFE. She is a very good one, and a lot of people know that. This book is a little bit of romance, mystery, and can give you the creeps. This is a very unique book and I really recommend it. It is in third person, and is both for boys and girls. It is a cliffhanger, but a series book. I have not read the other books.

The boy in the striped pajamas

This week I read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas By John Boyne. This book is about a nine-year-old boy named Bruno who has a perfect wealthy life, living in a house with 5 floors! One day he comes back from school and sees his maid, Maria, packing up all his belongings. He asks her, where they are going and she answers that they are moving due to his Fathers job as a soldier. When he arrives at his new home, he hates it. No one to play with, nothing to do, and so he decides to go explore. He finds a little boy his age, in striped pj's sitting on the ground looking down. They become friends and then, dun dun dun.... This book is a little sad and not for younger people so it is more of a advanced level of reading. It has lots of good description, and I really enjoyed it.

This week I read wonder

This week I read a book called Wonder by R. J Palacio. This book is about a boy who has a medical issue with his face that he was born with and now, after a bunch of surgeries, 10-year-old August Pullman decides to start middle school at a real school. This is a major change since for all his life, he's been home schooled. At first, everyone makes fun of him but will that change throughout the year? This book is very touching and sweet and makes you wonder about August and how he looks like. I really recommend this book for people who would like to laugh, get a little sad, and other mixed feelings. I think that  this is a unique book with a good plot. This book has many parts of other people's perspectives, by the way.

Week 7 Flutter

This week I read a book called Flutter by Erin E. Moulton. This book is about a girl named Maple and her two sisters one older, Dawn, and the younger, Beetle. Their mom gives birth to a girl that they decide to name Lily but she is weak and sick and might not make it through the night. After hearing many stories about the Wise Woman, a spirit that is very powerful and can grant miracles, Maple decides to find her by herself and ask for a miracle to cure Lily. Dawn sees that Maple is acting suspicious so Maple tells Dawn about going and all that. Together, they will have to walk many miles to find the Wise Woman and grant that one miracle.  This is a touching, adventurous book that is also a little sad, but I couldn't take my eyes off of it. It is a very good book for both genders. Erin also wrote a book called Tracing Stars.

Overnight Reading

This week I read a book called Masterpiece by Elise Broach. It was a book about a beetle who lives in a cupboard in the Pompaday's household. The beetles name is Marvin, and he really likes to explore the house-but hidden, for he must not be seen. One day Mrs.Pompaday's son, James, who is a sophisticated, now eleven year old boy who has his birthday. Marvin decides to find him a present with his family and finds it, a rare quarter. But when Marvin climbs up onto James' desk to put his present there- dun dun dun!!!!

This book is a strange book that is easy to read and is a little babyish, but has lot's of description. At some points it was confusing, but then you would understand. It has pictures, and is 320 pages.

Next book- Flutter

Week 5 Ask My Mood Ring How I Feel

This week I read a book called Ask My Mood Ring How I Feel by Diana Lopez. This book is about a girl named Erica but her nickname is Chia since she has a lot of Chia Pets. She has two younger siblings, one a geeky little sister named Carmen, and the other one is a two year old little brother named Jimmy. When they find out their mom has breast cancer, everything flips. Erica has to do all she can to fullfill her promesa, meaning promise in Spanish. This book really makes you think, and is a medium pace book that is pretty touching and expresses the fact that friends really do help even if they are 'long lost'. This page might be a two week book for some people, but is pretty simple to read in one week.

Week 3 Book Abby Vilner

This week I read a book called Leap Day by Wendy Mass which has 212 pages. This book is would probably be more of a medium book with pretty funny/ intense parts to it. This book is about a 16 year old girl who was born on leap day so she would be turning 4 in leap years. She has an older brother who is 18 and is a pretty good older brother who is willing to drive Josie, his little sister around in a old car that has been passed on from their mom, who got it from their grandma. The whole day, Josie is looking forward to the evening at the lake although she has no idea what is going on. This book is recommended for GIRLS because some parts include girly stuff including giving birth at 18. I really liked this book because the author is very descriptive and its as if your in the book, seeing everything. Although like I said some parts are intense, the book is a kind of touching, funny book. Next week I am planning on reading Ask My Mood Ring How I Feel by Diana Lopez.

Abby Vilner's book review

This week I read a book called The One and Only Zoe Lama by Tish Cohen. This book is about a twelve year old who is really popular in school for helping everyone with their problems. One day, a new girl named Devon Sweeney joins Zoe's class and pretty much takes over Zoe's job for no good reason. This is a pretty fun book that is funny, a little touching near the end, and shows off how different people's personalities could be. I recommend this book for people who like books at a medium/fastish pace and for mostly girls. I can't really think of a book that relates to it though... Next week i am planing to read a book called Leap Day because to me the author is familiar and i have read a lot of books by her and it sounds like a good book.

My favorite colors are green and purple and my favorite animals are dogs, dolphins, giraffes, and hamsters. I like to read in a lot of categories but I don't really like non fiction but I read and like a lot of fiction.

My top 3 favorite books that I really enjoy and recommend are:

1. Eight Keys by Suzanne LaFleur.

This book is about a girl named Elise and both her parents passed away so she lives with her Aunt and Uncle and they are pretty wealthy. Elise's BFF is a boy named Franklin who seems to be very nice but one day their relationship starts to fade and for a while, Elise is on her own. For all her life, Elise has been wondering what is behind those eight doors that are in her Uncle's barn. Its up to her her to find the missing keys of the past.

2. Mango Shaped Space by Wendy Mass

Since birth, Mia has always saw something different in life. Words, sounds, and numbers have always had a color to them. This has always been a secret- but when it starts to affect schoolwork, she will have to spill it. After a while, Mia realizes that she has synesthesia, a mingling of senses.

3. One for the Murphy's by
